The BLACK+DECKER 40V MAX 13-inch String Trimmer & Lawn Edger (LST140C) is a cordless, battery-powered 2-in-1 tool that trims overgrowth and converts to a precise edger with an easy-to-read charge indicator.

Designed for homeowners who want a dependable, low-maintenance solution for yard edge definition and clearing thick grass, this model pairs a 40V MAX lithium-ion battery with High-Torque PowerDrive technology. The tool feeds line automatically, transitions between trimming and edging in seconds, and includes a wall-mountable charging base to keep storage tidy. It’s built to balance cutting performance with simple handling so routine lawn upkeep is faster and cleaner.

How well does it cut thick grass and overgrowth?

The PowerDrive high-torque transmission delivers increased cutting force at the string, helping to slice through dense patches and post-mowing overgrowth. While run-time depends on battery charge and vegetation density, the design focuses power where it’s needed for swift, clean cuts.

• High-torque gearing concentrates motor power at the cutting head for effective trimming.
• 13-inch cutting swath balances reach with control around beds and fences.
• Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) maintains consistent line length without manual bumping.

How quickly does it switch between trimming and edging?

Conversion between weed trimmer and edger modes is tool-free and can be done in seconds, so you can move from clearing grass to creating neat borders without interrupting workflow. The mechanism is intuitive, making it easy even for first-time users to get a consistent edge.

• Tool-free mode change for fast transitions on the lawn.
• Edger orientation gives straight, clean cuts along sidewalks and driveways.
• Compact 13-inch head improves maneuverability in tight spaces.

What does the battery indicator tell you and how is charging handled?

The 40V MAX lithium-ion battery includes a state-of-charge indicator so you can monitor remaining power at a glance and plan work accordingly. The kit ships with a charger and a wall-mountable charging base, keeping the battery and trimmer organized and ready between uses.

• Built-in charge indicator displays battery level during use.
• Wall-mountable charging base saves floor space in the garage or shed.
• Included charger replenishes the battery for next-use readiness.

How does the automatic line feed improve usability?

The Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) delivers consistent line without bumping, reducing interruptions and keeping cutting performance steady. That means less time fiddling with line and more time working, particularly useful when dealing with uneven terrain or thick patches.

• AFS keeps trimmer line at optimal length for continuous cutting.
• Eliminates need for manual bump feed, saving time and effort.
• Reliable line management supports smoother, uninterrupted trimming sessions.
