Fluval Plant & Shrimp Stratum aquarium substrate, 2 kg — porous, non-compacting for rapid root growth

Fluval 12693 Plant and Shrimp Stratum is a lightweight, porous freshwater aquarium substrate engineered to support rapid plant rooting, healthy microbial colonization, and safe shrimp shelter.

Fluval Stratum is formulated for planted freshwater tanks and shrimp habitats. Its open, granular structure allows roots to penetrate easily while offering a large surface area for beneficial nitrifying bacteria to establish. The product is lightweight and non-compacting, which helps maintain filtration performance and stable water conditions without discoloring the aquarium water.

How does Fluval Stratum help aquatic plants establish strong roots?

The substrate’s porous composition encourages roots to grow through and around particles so plants anchor firmly and access nutrients more effectively. Because it doesn’t compact, roots aren’t smothered and can spread naturally. Combining Stratum with a targeted plant fertilizer gives plants the macro- and micronutrients they need to thrive.

• Porous granules allow easy root penetration and oxygen flow
• Non-compacting texture supports long-term root expansion
• Pairs well with Fluval Plant Micronutrients for complete nutrition

Will using this substrate affect aquarium water chemistry or clarity?

Stratum is designed to maintain a neutral to slightly acidic pH range preferred by many aquatic plants, tropical fish, and shrimp. It is formulated not to tint the water, so you’ll retain clear aquarium water even with tannin-producing driftwood present. Its structure also helps biological filtration by fostering beneficial bacteria colonies that contribute to water quality.

• Helps stabilize neutral to slightly acidic pH levels
• Does not leach color or cloud aquarium water
• Promotes beneficial nitrifying bacterial growth on particle surfaces

How does Fluval Stratum benefit shrimp and small invertebrates?

The substrate creates a textured environment where young shrimp can hide and feed safely until they’re large enough to explore open tank areas. Fine crevices and surface area also support biofilm growth, a natural food source for shrimp. The gentle particle size reduces the risk of injury and supports molting success.

• Provides refuge and hiding spaces for baby shrimp
• Encourages biofilm formation for natural grazing
• Gentle particles help protect delicate shrimp bodies during molting

How should I use and maintain Fluval Stratum in my planted tank?

Rinse lightly only if recommended by the package; Stratum is lightweight so minimal disturbance is best when setting up. Layer it as the primary substrate at the bottom of the tank and plant directly into it; add plant-specific fertilizers as needed. Routine maintenance focuses on water changes and gentle siphoning around roots to avoid removing beneficial bacteria and fine particles.

• Use as the base substrate layer for planted setups and shrimp tanks
• Plant directly into the substrate; supplement with plant micronutrients
• Perform gentle cleaning to preserve bacterial colonies and substrate texture

Who is this for: Fluval Stratum is intended for aquarium hobbyists building planted freshwater tanks, shrimp keepers seeking safe nursery substrate, and anyone wanting an inert, non-discoloring base that supports biological filtration and vigorous plant growth. It is suitable for beginners setting up their first planted aquarium as well as experienced aquascapers who need a reliable, plant-friendly foundation.
