Kaytee Wild Bird Mealworms 499 g — Oven-Dried High-Protein Treats to Attract Bluebirds & Wrens

Kaytee Wild Bird Mealworms are oven-dried, preservative-free high-protein treats designed to attract and nourish insect-eating wild birds like bluebirds, wrens, robins, chickadees, woodpeckers, cardinals and backyard chickens.

These 17.6-ounce mealworms come oven-dried for consistent quality and long shelf life, offering a simple way to add animal-based protein to backyard feeding stations. Unlike many seed-only mixes, dried mealworms appeal to species that prefer insects, especially during nesting and fledgling seasons when young birds need extra protein. You can offer them alone in a dedicated mealworm feeder, sprinkle them on platform feeders, or mix a portion into your favorite seed blend to increase its attractiveness.

How will Kaytee mealworms change my backyard bird visits?

Feeding oven-dried mealworms expands the variety of birds likely to visit your yard by providing a food source some species prefer over seeds. Expect to see more insectivores and nesting parents drawn in, which can increase daily activity and diversity at your feeders without complicating setup.

• Attracts insect-eating species such as bluebirds, wrens, and robins
• Encourages feeding by adult birds raising chicks
• Works with both platform and enclosed feeders
• Easy to mix with seeds or offer alone for targeted feeding

How should I offer these mealworms to maximize use and freshness?

Use a tray, shallow dish, or a purpose-built mealworm feeder so birds can easily access the food without waste. Because these mealworms are oven-dried and preservative-free, keep the package sealed in a cool, dry place and avoid prolonged exposure to rain or humidity to preserve texture and aroma.

• Serve in a shallow tray or platform feeder for easy access
• Mix into seed blends sparingly to boost palatability
• Store unopened in a cool, dry cupboard; reseal after opening
• Replace if soaked or heavily soiled to prevent spoilage

Are these mealworms safe and appropriate for nestlings and chickens?

Oven-dried mealworms provide concentrated protein that many wild nestlings and backyard chickens readily consume; they are a complementary food, not a complete diet. Use them as a supplemental high-energy treat to support growth and daily activity, while continuing to provide a balanced feed/formula for young birds and a complete feed for poultry.

• Safe as a supplemental protein source for nestlings and adult wild birds
• Suitable as an occasional treat for backyard chickens
• Not intended to replace nutritionally complete formulas or feeds
• Preservative- and additive-free for simpler ingredient profile

What practical benefits come with Kaytee's 17.6 oz package?

The larger 17.6-ounce package gives you more feeding opportunities between purchases while using less single-use plastic than some conventional containers. Oven-drying concentrates shelf stability so you can store enough product on hand for weekly or seasonal feeding without rapid spoilage.

• Generous 17.6 oz quantity for frequent feeders or small flocks
• Less packaging waste compared with smaller plastic tubs
• Oven-dried format extends usable life when stored properly
• Convenient for mixing with seeds or filling multiple feeders

Who is this for: Kaytee Wild Bird Mealworms are ideal for backyard birders who want to attract insect-loving species, breeders and parents feeding nestlings, and small flock owners who use high-protein treats. Choose these mealworms if you want an easy, preservative-free way to diversify food offerings and support birds that prefer insect protein over seed mixes.
