KLEIN TOOLS LAN Scout Jr. 2 VDV526-200 Ethernet Cable Tester for CAT5e/6/6A — Backlit LCD & Tone Generator

The Klein Tools VDV526-200 LAN Scout Jr. 2 is a compact Ethernet cable tester that verifies pin-to-pin wiring, diagnoses common faults, and generates tones for CAT 5e, CAT 6 and CAT 6A cables terminated with RJ45 connectors.

The LAN Scout Jr. 2 combines a clear backlit display, simple three-button operation, and multiple tone options to speed troubleshooting for installed or loose data cables. It detects opens, shorts, miswires, split pairs, crossovers and shield continuity while offering a tone generator mode that pairs with a probe (sold separately). Powered by two AAA batteries (included), this handheld unit is built to fit on a technician’s belt or in a service bag for everyday network work.

How does this tester identify wiring faults on Ethernet cabling?

The tester walks through each conductor and reports a full pin-to-pin wiremap so you can see exactly which pins are correct or faulty. Its large backlit LCD shows results clearly in dim utility closets or under raised floors, and icons indicate the specific fault type for faster repairs.

• Detects open conductors and shorted pairs
• Flags miswires, split-pair errors and crossover configurations
• Checks shield continuity for shielded RJ45 terminations
• Displays a clear, readable wiremap on a backlit screen

What tone and tracing features help locate cables in a bundle?

The LAN Scout Jr. 2 includes a tone generator with selectable styles to help identify single conductors, paired wires, or all eight conductors at once. Use a compatible probe (Klein VDV500-123) to trace a live tone through cable runs, junctions, and patch panels without disconnecting active links when practical.

• Multiple tone styles: solid, warble, and selective conductor tones
• Works with tone probes (probe sold separately) for fast cable tracing
• Tone all 8 conductors or isolate a single wire or pair
• Preserves workflow by enabling non-destructive identification

How does the LAN Scout Jr. 2 fit into daily installation and maintenance work?

This tester is designed for quick checks during installation, patch panel labeling, and routine network maintenance. Its compact footprint and auto power-off feature conserve battery life; the included AAA batteries let you start testing right away at job sites.

• Small, portable design for field or in-closet use
• Auto Power-Off after 10 minutes (test) and 60 minutes (tone) to save batteries
• Three-button interface reduces training time for new technicians
• Works with standard RJ45 terminated CAT 5e/6/6A cables and patch cords

What setup or accessories will I need to get the best results?

The unit is ready to use with the included AAA batteries and works on both installed and loose cables. For active tracing and remote identification, pair it with Klein’s VDV500-123 tone probe; a small inventory of spare batteries is useful for heavy daily use.

• Includes 2 × AAA batteries so the tester is ready out of the box
• Optional VDV500-123 probe needed to trace tones in bundles or panels
• Compatible with common RJ45 patch panels and keystone jacks
• Carry case or pouch recommended for on-site protection

Who is this for: The Klein Tools VDV526-200 LAN Scout Jr. 2 is aimed at network installers, IT technicians, low-voltage contractors and facilities staff who need a straightforward, portable tester for CAT 5e/6/6A Ethernet cable verification and tracing. It’s a practical choice when you want rapid fault identification, a readable backlit report, and tone compatibility for tracing without overcomplicating the toolset.
