Plugable Dual 1080p HDMI Universal Docking Station UD-3900Z — USB-C/USB-A 10-Port Dock with Gigabit Ethernet

The Plugable Dual 1080p HDMI Universal Docking Station (UD-3900Z) expands a laptop into a 10-port workstation with two 1920×1200 HDMI displays from a single USB-C or USB-A connection.

This compact vertical dock converts a single USB connection into a full desktop hub designed for mixed fleets and everyday productivity. It provides dual HDMI video output, multiple USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and audio passthrough, while remaining plug-and-play on most systems. macOS users should install DisplayLink drivers to enable external displays; Windows and ChromeOS typically work without extra setup. Note: the UD-3900Z does not provide laptop charging and does not support HDCP-encrypted streaming.

How does this dock enable dual monitors from one laptop?

The UD-3900Z uses DisplayLink video technology to drive two independent HDMI displays up to 1920×1200 from a single USB host connection. This allows users to add a second external monitor even on systems that normally support only one external display.

• Supports two HDMI outputs at up to 1920×1200 each.
• Compatible with M1–M5 MacBooks and MacBook Neo for expanded multi-monitor setups when DisplayLink is installed.
• Works with USB-C and USB-A hosts—both cables included for immediate use.
• Not compatible with DisplayPort-only monitors without an HDMI input; no HDCP for protected streaming.

What ports and connectivity does the UD-3900Z offer?

This dock provides a variety of ports tailored to office and productivity tasks, giving laptop users a full desktop-style setup with wired networking and peripheral support.

• Two HDMI ports, two USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) ports, and four USB 2.0 ports for keyboards, mice, and accessories.
• Gigabit Ethernet for stable wired networking and a 3.5mm audio jack for headsets or speakers.
• Both USB-C and USB-A host cables included for compatibility with older and newer laptops.
• Vertical compact design reduces desk footprint and keeps cables organized.

Which operating systems are supported and what setup is required?

The UD-3900Z is built for cross-platform deployment in managed and mixed-OS environments. Setup steps differ slightly by platform to ensure video and peripheral functionality.

• Windows: drivers typically install automatically through Windows Update; plug and use with minimal setup.
• macOS: requires DisplayLink driver installation to enable external displays; macOS users should download the latest DisplayLink driver from Plugable or DisplayLink.
• ChromeOS: generally plug-and-play without extra drivers for external displays and peripherals.
• Does not charge the laptop—power must come from the computer or separate power source.

What are the use-case limits and who should avoid this dock?

The UD-3900Z is optimized for office productivity, remote workstations, and IT-standardized desks. It is not intended for high-performance gaming, professional video editing, or playing HDCP-protected streaming services.

• Great for productivity apps, web conferencing, spreadsheets, and multiple-window workflows.
• Not recommended for full-screen, high-frame-rate gaming or HDCP-protected streaming (Netflix, Hulu).
• Does not support DisplayPort input monitors without an HDMI connection.
• Does not provide laptop charging—ensure your laptop is powered separately if needed.

Who is this for: The Plugable UD-3900Z is aimed at business users, remote employees, and IT managers who need a reliable, compact docking solution to standardize multi-monitor workstations across Windows, macOS (with DisplayLink), and ChromeOS devices. It’s ideal for teams that require extra USB ports, wired Ethernet, and two external HDMI displays for improved productivity, while preferring a low-profile dock that’s easy to deploy and support.
