KLEIN TOOLS Scout Pro 3 Cable Tester Kit VDV501-851 — 5 LanMap & 5 CoaxMap Remotes, Backlit LCD

The Klein Tools VDV501-851 Scout Pro 3 kit is a handheld cable tester and locator that verifies RJ45, RJ11/12 and F‑connector coax runs while mapping up to five remote cable locations.

Designed for technicians, installers and maintenance pros, this starter kit combines a backlit Scout Pro 3 tester with five LanMap and five CoaxMap locator remotes so you can confirm wiring, measure cable length and identify multiple runs quickly. It reports common faults (open, short, miswire, split pair), displays approximate cable length up to 2,000 feet (610 m), and provides clear wiremap results on an easy-to-read LCD. The kit is intended for unenergized Ethernet and voice lines and is not a replacement for specialized PoE diagnostic models.

How does the Scout Pro 3 check and display wiring faults?

The Scout Pro 3 runs a complete wiremap on terminated RJ45/RJ11 and F‑connector coax cables to highlight open circuits, shorts, miswires and split pairs. The results show on the backlit LCD so you can read status in dimly lit spaces and verify each conductor quickly.

• Wiremap for RJ45/RJ11 and coax F‑connectors
• Detects Open, Short, Miswire, Split‑Pair
• Backlit LCD shows conductor status and wiring diagrams

Can this unit locate and identify multiple cable runs on a job?

Yes — the kit includes five LanMap remotes for data/voice and five CoaxMap remotes for video, letting you tag and locate several runs from a single tester. Each remote responds to the tester’s location signal so you can map run endpoints without disconnecting whole systems.

• Five LanMap remotes for RJ45/RJ11 runs
• Five CoaxMap remotes for coaxial video lines
• Map and ID multiple cables quickly on installations or troubleshooting

What length and tracing capabilities does it offer?

The Scout Pro 3 estimates cable length up to 2,000 feet (610 m), useful for planning and documenting runs. For detailed pair tracing you can use a compatible analog tone probe (sold separately) with the tester’s tone generator to audibly follow pairs and individual conductors through walls or bundles.

• Length measurement to 2,000 ft (610 m)
• Multiple style tone generator for pair tracing (probe sold separately)
• Works on unenergized Ethernet/phone/coax cables for safe testing

Are there limitations or special considerations to know?

The Scout Pro 3 is built for unenergized cable verification and mapping; it is not designed to diagnose powered Ethernet (PoE) systems unless you choose a POE‑rated SKU. It also requires proper termination at both ends to give accurate wiremap and length readings.

• Not intended for testing live PoE networks unless using POE‑specific models
• Accuracy depends on correct terminations and cable condition
• Tone probe needed for advanced audible tracing tasks (sold separately)

Who is this for: The Klein Tools VDV501-851 Scout Pro 3 kit is made for network installers, AV technicians, facility maintenance teams and electricians who need a compact, reliable tester to verify and map Ethernet, phone and coax cabling. If you install, document or troubleshoot multiple runs on residential, commercial or light industrial jobs, this kit delivers clear wiremap diagnostics, length estimates and multiple remote IDs to streamline testing and reduce guesswork in the field.
