Pennington Dense Shade Grass Seed Mix, 3.18 kg — Fertiliser-Coated Tall Fescue/Rye/Bluegrass for Low Sun

Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade Mix is a fertilizer-coated grass seed blend formulated to establish thick, durable turf in areas that receive only 2–6 hours of sun.

If parts of your yard stay mostly in shade, ordinary seed often thins out or fails to establish. This 7 lb Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade bag combines Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, and Kentucky Bluegrass with a fertilizer-enhanced coating to speed germination and support early growth. Designed for overseeding or starting new lawns, the mix produces visible sprouting in about 8–16 days and covers up to 1,750 sq. ft. for overseeding or 580 sq. ft. for new seed.

How quickly will I see grass after planting?

Expect green shoots within one to two weeks under good soil contact and moisture. The fertilizer-coated seed helps jump-start root and blade development so seedlings appear faster than uncoated seed.

• Visible germination typically in 8–16 days
• Fertilizer-enhanced coating encourages faster establishment
• Best results when soil kept consistently moist until seedlings set

Can this mix grow well in heavy shade and high-traffic spots?

This blend is formulated for shaded conditions (2–6 hours of sunlight) and mixes species chosen for shade tolerance plus wear resistance. While not immune to heavy wear, the combination of Tall Fescue, Ryegrass, and Kentucky Bluegrass improves durability and recovery.

• Shade-tolerant varieties that perform with limited sun
• Disease- and traffic-resistant genetics for stronger turf
• Use overseeding in worn areas to speed recovery

How much area will a 7 lb bag cover and how should I use it?

The 7 lb bag covers up to 1,750 sq. ft. when overseeding an existing lawn and about 580 sq. ft. for establishing a new lawn. Plant in early spring or early fall for best establishment; follow seed-to-soil contact and watering guidelines.

• Overseeding coverage: up to 1,750 sq. ft.
• New lawn coverage: about 580 sq. ft.
• Recommended planting windows: early spring or early fall

Does Smart Seed save water and why is the coating important?

Smart Seed varieties are bred for drought tolerance, helping established turf use up to 30% less water than ordinary grass. The fertilizer-enhanced seed coat aids early root growth and greener blades while reducing establishment stress.

• NexGen-bred seed for improved water efficiency once established
• Seed coat supplies nutrients for early development
• Long-term water savings after lawn matures
