SITERWELL photoelectric smoke detector GS509A — 10-year life, 85dB alarm, 9V battery

The SITERWELL GS509A is a photoelectric smoke detector with a 10-year product life that senses slow, smoldering fires and provides loud 85dB alerts for early home escape time.

This compact ceiling- or wall-mount alarm uses photoelectric sensing to detect smoke from smoldering fires, runs on a replaceable 9V battery, and is designed for a decade of service with routine battery changes. It meets NFPA 72 installation practice and combines simple controls with a loud audible alert and low-battery chirp so households can respond quickly if a fire starts.

How does the GS509A detect fires better than basic alarms?

The GS509A uses photoelectric technology, which is tuned to pick up visible smoke particles produced by slow, smoldering combustion. These types of fires often give off light, smoky plumes long before open flames develop, so early detection can extend escape time.

• Photoelectric sensor for improved detection of smoke from smoldering materials
• Less prone to false alarms from cooking steam compared with some ionization units
• Fast response to gradual smoke build-up in bedrooms and living areas

What maintenance and tests are required to keep the alarm reliable?

Weekly testing using the large built-in test button confirms the alarm electronics and horn are working. The unit uses a single 9V battery and will chirp to signal low battery; replacing the battery promptly keeps the detector functioning for the intended 10-year product life span.

• Press the test button weekly to verify operation
• Replace the 9V battery when the low-battery chirp sounds
• Follow the manufacturer’s recommended replacement timeline for full-device replacement within 10 years

How loud is the alarm and where should I install it?

The GS509A produces an audible alarm greater than 85 decibels, sufficient to wake most occupants when located properly. Install on ceilings or high on walls outside sleeping areas and on each level of the home for maximum coverage.

• Alarm output exceeds 85 dB for effective waking power
• Mount on ceiling or high on wall per NFPA 72 guidance
• Place outside bedrooms and on every habitable floor for full protection

What are the design features that make this detector easy to use?

The unit includes a simple twist-on mounting bracket for quick ceiling or wall installation and a prominent test/mute button to silence nuisance alarms. A clearly audible low-battery warning and long product life expectancy reduce the need for frequent full-unit replacements when batteries are kept current.

• Quick-install mounting bracket for tool-free mounting
• Large test/mute button for routine checks and temporary silence
• Low-battery audible alert to prompt timely battery replacement
