LEGO Technic NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket 632-Piece Model — 3-Stage Hand-Crank Separation, Display Stand

The LEGO Technic NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket (42221) is a 632‑piece STEM model that recreates the real rocket’s 3‑stage separation with a hand crank and includes 4 astronaut nanofigures for display and play.

Designed in collaboration with NASA and ESA, this LEGO Technic set lets kids and space fans assemble an authentic scale model of the Artemis Space Launch System used to send Orion toward the Moon. The build combines Technic engineering features with play elements — a manual separation mechanism, blue flame exhaust details and an information panel — so the finished model is both a working demonstration and an eye‑catching display piece.

How does the 3‑stage separation work on this LEGO rocket?

The model uses a simple, robust Technic mechanism driven by a hand crank to mimic the sequential separation of the real launch system. Turning the crank releases the solid rocket boosters first, then the core stage detaches and finally the upper stage with the Orion module separates.

• Hand crank activates internal gears and pins for staged separation.
• Visible separation points for boosters, core stage and upper stage.
• Blue flame elements highlight exhaust during pretend liftoff.
• Durable Technic connections allow repeated demonstrations.

What educational value does this set offer for kids and classrooms?

This kit introduces mechanical concepts such as gearing, staged separation and structural stability while encouraging spatial reasoning and step‑by‑step problem solving. It’s an engaging way to explore how multi‑stage rockets work without complex electronics, making it suitable for hands‑on STEM learning at home or in group activities.

• 632 pieces teach planning, sequencing and manual dexterity.
• Collaboration with NASA and ESA ensures realistic engineering references.
• No batteries required — mechanics are fully manual for concept clarity.
• Compatible with the LEGO Builder app for guided digital instructions.

What comes in the box and how big is the finished model?

The set contains 632 elements, including the three‑stage rocket structure, an engine module, the Orion spacecraft with launch abort system and four astronaut nanofigures. When displayed on its stand, the completed rocket measures over 27.5 inches (about 70 cm) tall, with a length of roughly 6.5 inches (16 cm) and a width of 3 inches (8 cm).

• Includes 4 astronaut nanofigures and an information display panel.
• Measures over 27.5 in (70 cm) high on its stand for prominent display.
• Built-in hand crank and visible separation points for interactive demos.
• 632 pieces suitable for ages 9 and up according to LEGO guidance.

How can kids play with and display the LEGO Artemis SLS model?

After building, children can role‑play mission scenarios using the nanofigures, demonstrate the stage separations with the crank, or use the included information panel as an educational backdrop. The tall display form and realistic details make it a strong centerpiece for a bedroom shelf, classroom table or STEM exhibit.

• Pretend play with 4 nanofigures and mission storytelling possibilities.
• Interactive crank lets kids reenact launch and separation sequences.
• Information panel supports learning and display context.
• Neat engineering details make it a conversation piece for visitors.

Who is this for? This LEGO Technic NASA Artemis SLS Rocket set is ideal for young builders aged 9 and older who are curious about rocketry, mechanical systems and space missions. It also fits well into classroom STEM kits, gift lists for aspiring engineers, or as a collectible model for space enthusiasts who appreciate accurate, hands‑on recreations of real launch vehicles.
