Countertop Ice Makers: What to Know Before You Buy One in the UK
A countertop ice maker turns tap water into a steady supply of ice in minutes — no plumbing, no freezer trays, just a plug. Here's what actually matters when choosing one for a UK kitchen.
Bullet vs nugget ice
Bullet ice (the small cylinders with a hollow centre) is what most compact machines make: first batch in 6–8 minutes, perfect for squash, soft drinks and coolboxes. Nugget ice — the soft, chewable "pebble" ice from cafés — needs a bigger machine (like the Kismile nugget maker) and costs more, but drinks fans swear by it because it chills faster and doesn't clunk.
The numbers that matter
- Daily output: 26 lbs (~12 kg) per day is the compact-class standard — plenty for a family plus guests. Nugget machines reach 35 lbs.
- First batch: 6–9 minutes from switch-on. The basket holds a batch while the next one freezes.
- Noise: expect gentle fridge-level hum (around 35–45 dB). The occasional rattle is just ice dropping into the basket.
- Counter space: roughly the footprint of a bread bin — check height under your wall units before buying.
Three things nobody tells you
- The basket isn't a freezer. Ice in the basket slowly melts and the water recycles into the next batch. Want a stockpile for a party? Bag batches into the freezer as they come.
- Use filtered water if your area is hard. UK hard-water limescale is the #1 reason machines slow down. Filtered water = clearer ice and a longer life.
- Clean it monthly. Run a cycle with a 10:1 water/white-vinegar mix, rinse twice. Ten minutes, and the ice always tastes fresh.
Check the voltage and plug first
UK mains electricity is 230V with a three-pin Type G plug. Before buying any countertop ice maker, check the rating plate or listing says 220–240V.
