A LEGO box is the safest great gift in toy retail — if the set matches the builder. Age labels help, but piece count and theme matter just as much. Here is the map.
Ages 1½–4: DUPLO territory
Oversized bricks that little hands can grip and nobody can swallow. Animal sets, trains and simple houses win here; anything with a favourite character is a bonus. Do not be tempted by standard LEGO yet — the pieces frustrate more than they entertain.
Ages 4–7: first real bricks
Sets marked 4+ use larger starter pieces and chunky instruction steps so children can build with light supervision. From about age six, 200–400 piece City, Friends and Creator sets hit the sweet spot: buildable in a weekend, playable for months.
Ages 8–12: the golden years
This is peak LEGO. 500–1,000 piece sets, motorised Technic starters, and licensed themes (space, superheroes, wizarding worlds) all land well. Creator 3-in-1 sets are the value pick — three builds from one box. A builder this age can follow any instruction book solo; the constraint is patience, not skill.
Teens and adults: display sets
The 18+ range — botanical collections, architecture skylines, iconic cars and film sets — is designed as much for the shelf as the build. Expect 1,000–3,000+ pieces and several relaxing evenings. For a teen who has “grown out of” LEGO, one of these usually proves otherwise.
Two quick rules for gift-buyers
- When in doubt, size down the age and up the theme — a finished set beats an abandoned one
- Check piece count against attention span, not age alone
