How to Pick the Right Printer Ink Cartridge (and Stop Overpaying)

Rule one: match the cartridge number, not the printer brand

Your printer takes a specific cartridge series — HP 305, Canon PG-545, Epson 604 and so on. It is printed on the old cartridge and inside the printer flap. A cartridge from the right brand but the wrong series will not fit; always search by that number.

XL is almost always the better deal

Standard and XL cartridges are the same physical size — the XL is simply filled properly. A standard cartridge might print 120 pages while its XL twin prints 300+ for perhaps 60% more money. Divide price by page yield (every listing states it) and the XL wins nearly every time for anyone who prints monthly.

Separate colours beat tri-colour — if your printer allows

Tri-colour cartridges combine cyan, magenta and yellow in one unit: when one colour runs dry, the whole cartridge is done. Printers that take individual colour tanks let you replace only what you use. If you are choosing a new printer, this is the spec to check first.

Three habits that stretch every cartridge

• Print in “draft” mode for everyday documents — it uses noticeably less ink
• Leave the printer on standby rather than switching at the wall; every cold start runs a cleaning cycle that drinks ink
